12 minute Relative Clauses Revision Activity

By Simon Thomas • Oct 19th, 2008 • Category: 4 - Intermediate, Creating Lessons from Scratch

Note: I came up with this simple activity today. It should take about 12 minutes or so, and leads naturally into an interview-style lesson.
Suggested level: intermediate.
Aims: to revise relative clauses in informal conversation; to practise attentive listening and polite turn-taking in informal conversations.
Materials: Whiteboard and pens.
Preparation: None.
Procedure:

Board the following, in two columns:

The place
The person
The food
The [...]

Speaking/Writing: Lists with a Twist (30 minutes or so)

By Simon Thomas • Sep 28th, 2008 • Category: 4 - Intermediate, 5 - Upper-Intermediate, 6 - Advanced, Creating Lessons from Scratch

By Simon Thomas • Sep 28th, 2008 • Category: 3 - Pre-Intermediate, 4 - Intermediate, 5 - Upper-Intermediate, 6 - Advanced, Using Coursebooks Creatively

Note: I found a close relation to this activity in 700 Classroom Activities by David Seymour and Maria Popova (Oxford: Macmillan, 2005)
Suggested levels: pre-intermediate to advanced.
Aims: to revise vocabulary; to practise polite turn-taking and the structures of informal conversation in English; to practise summarising information and giving opinions succinctly.
Preparation: A coursebook topic title; some questions. [...]

Interview Lesson (50 minutes to 1 hour 30 mins)

By Simon Thomas • Sep 28th, 2008 • Category: 2 - Elementary, 3 - Pre-Intermediate, 4 - Intermediate, 5 - Upper-Intermediate, 6 - Advanced, Creating Lessons from Scratch

Note: this idea comes from Jackie Jays, courtesy of the smokers’ corner at St Giles London Central. It’s a really good one to use with new classes, or old classes with a new teacher.
Suggested levels: strong elementary to advanced.
Aims: to revise and practise the grammar of English question forms; to practise polite turn-taking and the [...]
